By the time Temecula hits 105°F in July, it’s too late to discover your AC is low on charge. This is the exact pre-summer tune-up checklist I run on every customer system in the Inland Empire — what you can DIY, what needs a C-20 contractor, and what it should cost in 2026.
Inland Empire summers are not coastal summers. Temecula, Murrieta, and Menifee all average 35–45 days a year above 100°F. Hemet, Perris, and the desert-edge communities push past 110°F more than once a season. An AC that limped through last September will fail in this July — and a no-cool call during a heat advisory means a 3- to 7-day wait for parts at most supply houses.

A properly tuned residential AC loses about 5% of its capacity per year if it’s never serviced. The math is straightforward. A $129 tune-up that restores even 10% of lost capacity on a system running 1,200 hours a summer at 16 SEER2 saves roughly $90–$140 in SCE energy costs over a single season at current Inland Empire tiered rates. Run this list in March, April, or early May at the latest — before the first 95°F day. Items 1–8 are homeowner-safe with the disconnect pulled. Items 9–12 require a licensed C-20 HVAC contractor.
A clogged filter is the single most common cause of summer no-cool calls. Pull the filter, hold it up to a light, and if you can’t see the light through it, replace it — even if it’s only been in a month. Step up to MERV 11 minimum for the Inland Empire; MERV 13 if your system can handle the static pressure (most modern variable-speed equipment can). Pull the disconnect. Use a garden hose — not a pressure washer — and spray the coil from the inside outward, top to bottom. Foaming coil cleaner from any HVAC supply house ($12–$18) helps on heavily fouled units. Clear a 24-inch perimeter of branches, tumbleweed, and stored items. Bent fins reduce heat transfer. A $10 fin comb at any supply house straightens minor damage in five minutes. Heavy hail damage or impact dents require a tech.
An algae-clogged condensate line is the second most common summer service call. Find the white PVC line near the air handler, vacuum the outlet end with a wet/dry vac for 60 seconds, then pour a cup of distilled white vinegar (not bleach — bleach degrades PVC and metal pans) down the access tee. Replace batteries in any battery-powered thermostat. Verify the call for cooling actually engages the outdoor unit within 60 seconds. If you have a smart thermostat (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell), check that the schedule, geofencing, and Wi-Fi connection are all current. Walk the house with the system running. Every supply register should produce strong, cool airflow; every return should have unobstructed intake. Furniture in front of returns kills capacity in two-story Temecula homes faster than anything else. Check that dampers in the trunk lines aren’t accidentally closed from a previous service.
If you can safely access the attic or crawlspace, walk it with a flashlight. Look for disconnected duct boots, crushed flex sections, torn vapor barriers, and insulation that’s compressed below R-6. With the disconnect pulled, verify the disconnect housing is intact, lugs aren’t corroded, and the conduit isn’t damaged. With the disconnect engaged, listen to the contactor click in when the thermostat calls. A buzzing or chattering contactor is a near-failure indicator and a $20–$45 part for a tech to replace.
This requires manifold gauges and EPA 608 certification. An undercharged system will limp through May but completely lose capacity above 95°F outdoor — the most common cause of “my AC stopped working in July” complaints. A 10% undercharge on R-410A or R-454B drops cooling capacity by roughly 20%. Charge is verified by measuring superheat or subcooling depending on the metering device. Capacitors are the #1 failure component on Inland Empire systems. Heat is what kills them, and we have a lot of heat. A capacitor rated at 45/5 µF that measures at 41/4 is on its way out and should be replaced proactively before a heat advisory takes it out at 4 p.m. on a Saturday. Capacitor replacement is $185–$285 installed on a maintenance visit; $375–$550 on an emergency call. Same logic on contactors.
A dust-loaded blower wheel can lose 30% of rated airflow without throwing any obvious symptoms. Amperage outside the motor’s nameplate range indicates either a failing motor, a binding wheel, or a static pressure problem in the ductwork. This is also where ECM (variable-speed) motors get diagnosed; ECM motors that throw fault codes on startup are flagging an electronics-board issue that costs $400–$800 to replace but can be planned around if caught in spring.
A properly running residential AC produces an 18–22°F temperature drop between the return and supply trunk at design conditions. Below 16°F means low charge, low airflow, or a dirty coil. Above 22°F means restricted airflow — usually a dirty filter, closed dampers, or a duct collapse. Total external static pressure over 0.8 in.w.g. on a residential system means the ductwork can’t move the air the equipment is producing. For most Inland Empire homes, the Standard Tune-Up is the right call — it catches the failure modes that actually cause July no-cool emergencies without paying for the chemical coil clean and blower wheel pull every year. Reserve the Premium for systems that haven’t been professionally serviced in 3+ years or that are visibly fouled.

If you noticed any of these last summer, the tune-up is non-negotiable this spring:
Long run times on moderate days. A properly sized 4-ton system in Temecula should not run continuously when the outdoor is only 92°F. Long run times under moderate load usually indicate low refrigerant or a fouled outdoor coil.
A 5–7°F variance between rooms on the same floor. This is a ductwork or static pressure issue. Pre-summer is the window to address it; mid-summer fixes are emergency pricing.
Higher SCE bills with the same thermostat settings. Three summers of climbing bills on identical setpoints is a capacity degradation signal. The capacity decline is real and the tune-up frequently catches it.

There’s a point where the math stops working. If your system is 12+ years old, runs on R-22 refrigerant (banned for production since 2020, supply prices now over $200 per pound when available), or has had two major repairs in the last 24 months, a tune-up is a stopgap. March through April is the ideal window. By early May, demand starts climbing and schedules tighten. Once daytime highs are consistently over 95°F (typically late May in the Inland Empire), tune-ups get bumped behind no-cool emergencies and you may be waiting 2–3 weeks for a slot.

Twice a year for Inland Empire homes — once in spring (March/April) for cooling season, once in fall (September/October) for heating season and Santa Ana wind preparation. Single annual maintenance is acceptable for newer systems (under 5 years old) in low-dust environments, but the Inland Empire’s dust and heat load make biannual the better default.
