Five minutes with this guide and you’ll know more about your AC than the last person who tried to sell you one.
Walk out to your condenser and look for the metal or vinyl data plate on the side of the cabinet — every unit has one, usually near the refrigerant line connections. Two numbers matter: the model number (what the machine is) and the serial number (when it was born). Between them you can pull the system’s capacity, efficiency rating, refrigerant type, and age — the exact facts that determine whether a repair quote makes sense, whether a replacement bid is sized honestly, and whether your unit is still under parts warranty.

Air conditioner capacity is measured in tons, where one ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour of cooling. Manufacturers encode it in the model number as thousands of BTUs — so look for a two-digit number that’s a multiple of 6 or 12: 18 = 1.5 tons, 24 = 2 tons, 30 = 2.5 tons, 36 = 3 tons, 42 = 3.5 tons, 48 = 4 tons, 60 = 5 tons. A model reading 4TTR6036 has “36” buried in it: a 3-ton unit. This single trick works across nearly every residential brand, and it matters because capacity drives everything — a replacement quote for a 5-ton system when your data plate says 36 (3 tons) is either a red flag or a story someone needs to justify with a Manual J load calculation, not a shrug. Oversizing is one of the most common and expensive mistakes in Inland Empire installs.
Trane: 4TTR6036 — “4” is the refrigerant family (R-410A era), “TTR” the product family, “6” the nominal SEER tier, “036” = 3 tons. Carrier: 24ACC636 — “24” marks outdoor cooling units, “ACC6” the series and efficiency tier, “36” = 3 tons (Bryant, Carrier’s sibling brand, uses similar logic). Goodman: GSX160361 — “GSX16” is the SEER 16 split AC line, “036” = 3 tons; newer R-32/R-454B-era lines carry updated prefixes like GSXH5. Lennox: XC21-036 or 14ACX-036 — the efficiency lives right in the family name (XC21 ≈ SEER 21 class), “036” = 3 tons. The pattern holds: family code tells you the product tier and rough efficiency, the capacity digits tell you tonnage. If your model doesn’t match these examples exactly, manufacturers revise nomenclature between generations — but the multiple-of-6 capacity code almost always survives.
Age hides in the serial number, and every brand encodes it differently. Trane/American Standard: since 2002, the first two digits are the year (a serial starting 10… is 2010; letters resumed in 2010+ formats — check both patterns). Carrier/Bryant/Payne: typically the third and fourth digits are the year, first and second the week (2314XXXXX = week 23 of 2014). Goodman/Amana: first two digits year, next two month (1406… = June 2014). Lennox: commonly digits 3–4 are the year (58K10… patterns vary by decade). When in doubt, the manufacturer’s website or a photo sent to us settles it in minutes. Why age matters so much here: Inland Empire duty cycles are brutal, and local AC lifespan runs 12–15 years against the national 15–20. A data plate that says 2011 tells you to weigh every major repair against replacement — and it also tells you whether the compressor might still be inside a 10-year parts warranty, which changes the repair math entirely.
The data plate lists the factory refrigerant charge and type, and in 2026 this is the most consequential line on the sticker. R-22 (units roughly pre-2010): production banned since 2020; refrigerant is reclaimed-only and painfully expensive — major repairs on R-22 systems almost never pencil out. R-410A (roughly 2010–2024): still serviceable, but new equipment production has moved on, and refrigerant prices are climbing as supply tightens. R-454B (2025-onward systems from Carrier, Trane, Lennox, and others): the current standard after the January 2025 refrigerant transition. If your plate says R-410A and you’re facing a compressor or coil failure, the replacement conversation isn’t upselling — it’s the reality that new parts ecosystems, refrigerant economics, and SEER2 efficiency standards have all moved to the new platform.

Square footage is a rough guide only — insulation, windows, orientation, and ceiling height swing the real number, which is why proper sizing uses a Manual J calculation, not a rule of thumb.
Getting repair quotes: a tech who knows your model, age, and refrigerant before arriving shows up with the right parts and can’t hand-wave the diagnosis. Checking warranty: most manufacturers give 10-year parts warranties to the original registered owner — punch your serial number into the manufacturer’s lookup page before approving any parts bill; I’ve seen homeowners pay full price for compressors that were covered. Vetting replacement bids: when a bid arrives, the proposed model number should decode to a sensible capacity for your home, a real SEER2 rating, and current-generation refrigerant. A contractor who can’t walk you through the model number of the equipment they’re proposing is telling you something.
