A healthy air conditioner sounds like a quiet, steady whoosh. Anything else — a metallic bang, a constant electrical buzz, a high hiss, a rhythmic click that won’t stop — is the system telling you something specific. Here’s how to translate the noise into a diagnosis before you call us.
There’s a reason “What is that noise?” is one of the most common opening lines on a service call. Every AC sound corresponds to a specific mechanical or electrical event happening inside a sealed system you can’t see into. The trick is learning what each noise actually means — because the difference between “ignore it for a week” and “shut it off right now” is genuinely a $200 vs. a $3,500 decision.

There’s also a less alarming version: a single bang on startup or shutdown, which is usually expansion or contraction in the metal ductwork — a sheet-metal “oil can” effect — not the unit itself. That’s annoying but harmless and usually fixed by adding cross-braking or stiffeners to the duct.
What to do: If the bang is continuous or repeating, shut the system off at the thermostat immediately. Running a compressor with a loose internal part for even an hour can cascade into total compressor failure. We see this most often in Wildomar and Winchester homes with original-equipment units from the 2010–2012 build wave. Compressor replacement runs $2,400–$4,500, and at 12+ years old, full-system replacement is usually the better call.
Buzzing is an electrical sound. It’s caused by current passing through something it shouldn’t, or through something that’s struggling to do its job. In residential AC systems, the most common buzzing culprits are a failing contactor (the relay that powers the compressor and fan on each cooling cycle), a capacitor that’s dying or has bulged, loose electrical connections at the disconnect or inside the control panel, or a condenser fan motor that’s binding and drawing too much current.
A second category is mechanical buzzing: debris caught against the fan blade, a piece of bark or palm frond rattling against the grille, or a loose mounting bolt vibrating. That’s the version you can sometimes fix yourself by killing power at the disconnect and clearing the visible debris. What to do: If the buzz is constant whether the system is running or just calling for cool, it’s almost certainly electrical. The single most common fix is a $35–$80 capacitor replacement, plus labor. A failed contactor runs about the same. If both are failing together (common when one goes), expect $250–$425 total. Don’t open the disconnect box yourself — even with the breaker off, capacitors hold a lethal charge for hours.
A high-pitched hiss anywhere on the system means pressurized gas is escaping or transitioning where it shouldn’t. The two main flavors are refrigerant leaks — anywhere along the copper line set, at brazed joints, in the indoor or outdoor coil itself — and high-side pressure relief, which is the system venting because something’s blocked or because the compressor is overheating.
Refrigerant leak hissing tends to be steady, low-volume, and audible only when you’re close to the line set or air handler. Why this is worse in 2026: R-410A — the refrigerant in virtually every system installed between 2010 and the start of 2025 — is being phased down under the AIM Act, and wholesale prices in Riverside County have roughly doubled since 2024. What to do: Shut the system off. Refrigerant leak repair requires EPA 608 certification — both because of the federal law and because doing it right means electronic leak detection, joint repair, system evacuation to vacuum, and a weighed-in recharge. Topping off a leaking system without finding the leak is illegal, ineffective, and at $25–$45 per pound for R-410A, financially absurd.
Clicking is the trickiest sound to diagnose because some of it is supposed to happen. The contactor clicks every time the system turns on or off. The thermostat clicks when it switches state. The condensate float switch clicks. The damper actuator on a zoned system clicks. None of that is a problem.
What you’re listening for is rapid, repeated clicking from the outdoor unit or the air handler — typically 1–2 clicks per second, sometimes continuing for 30 seconds or more before either the system kicks on or shuts down on a safety. That pattern is the contactor or the start relay trying to engage and failing, or a hard-start kit failing to bridge a tired compressor, or a low-voltage control issue confusing the board. Squealing — usually a worn blower motor bearing or a slipping belt (in the few older belt-drive systems left in the field). Sometimes it’s a brand-new belt seating in after a recent repair, which goes away in a week. If it doesn’t, the bearing is going.
Rattling — almost always a loose panel screw, a missing piece of insulation flapping in the duct, or a piece of debris that’s worked its way into the condenser fan cage. Free fix in 9 out of 10 cases.

Gurgling — refrigerant moving through a partially restricted line, or condensate flowing through a clogged drain trap. The first is bad. The second is fixable.
Screaming or screeching — high-pressure refrigerant relief. Shut the system off at the breaker immediately and don’t restart it. This is a same-day call.
