When smoke settles into the Temecula Valley, the advice everyone repeats is “close your windows and run your AC.” That advice is incomplete and occasionally wrong. Whether running your system helps or hurts depends entirely on how the return side of your ductwork is built, what filter is in it, and whether the system pulls outside air.
This is the part of the wildfire smoke HVAC conversation nobody covers: your air conditioner is not an air purifier, and in a leaky attic duct system it can actively pull smoke into the house faster than the building envelope alone would. Here is how to set your system up before smoke season, what to do during an event, and how to recover afterward.
Wildfire smoke is dominated by PM2.5 — particles under 2.5 microns — with a large fraction in the 0.3 to 1.0 micron range. That size band is specifically the hardest for filters to catch, and it is small enough to reach deep lung tissue.
A standard MERV 8 filter, which is what the vast majority of Riverside County homes have installed, captures essentially none of it. MERV 8 is rated on 3.0 to 10.0 micron particles. Smoke passes straight through as if the filter were not there.

Efficiency ranges per ASHRAE 52.2. The 0.3–1.0 micron column is the one that matters for wildfire smoke.
MERV 13 is the practical residential floor for smoke, and it is also what California Title 24 has been pushing new construction toward. But it must go in a 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet, not jammed into a 1-inch return grille slot. A 1-inch MERV 13 adds enough static pressure to starve airflow and can freeze the coil — see frozen AC coil for what that looks like.
Here is the failure mode Jorge finds constantly. A home built in the 1990s or early 2000s has its air handler and return plenum in an unconditioned attic. The return-side ducting leaks somewhere between 10% and 25%. When the blower runs, it creates negative pressure and pulls attic air into the duct system — upstream of the filter, in many cases, or through the filter slot gap around a loose filter frame.
During a smoke event, the attic is full of smoke. Attic ventilation is designed to move outside air through the space continuously, so the attic reaches near-outdoor PM2.5 concentrations within an hour. A leaky return turns your air handler into an intake fan for smoky attic air.
This is why “run your AC” is not universally good advice, and why duct sealing is the highest-value smoke preparation you can do. In California, duct leakage is measured by a certified HERS rater with a duct blaster; the compliance target for new ducts is 5% of nominal system airflow. Late summer through Santa Ana season is the window. Everything below is cheaper and easier to do in advance than during an event, when every HVAC company in the county has a three-day backlog.

Run the fan continuously. Continuous circulation through a MERV 13 media cabinet gives you the closest thing to whole-house filtration you have. On a single-stage blower this costs roughly $18 to $40 a month at current SCE rates; on a variable-speed blower running low, far less. Set cooling normally on top of that.
Do not run the fan continuously. You are circulating attic smoke. Run cooling only as needed for temperature, close off the worst rooms, and concentrate a portable HEPA in one or two spaces you can seal reasonably well. This is the uncomfortable answer, and it is why the prep list matters.
This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is why houses smell like smoke for months. A filter that ran through a smoke event holds fine PM2.5 whether or not it looks dirty, and it re-releases particles into the airstream every time the blower starts.
If the system struggled through the event — short-cycling, weak airflow, or a noticeable capacity drop afterward — get it looked at. A coil coated in smoke residue behaves a lot like a coil coated in dust, and the symptoms overlap with an AC blowing warm air for other reasons.
Riverside County gets two distinct smoke seasons and they behave differently.
Fires in the San Bernardino and Cleveland national forests, plus long-range transport from Northern California and the Sierra. This smoke arrives aloft, mixes down, and can persist for days at moderate concentrations. Whole-house filtration is the right tool because exposure is long-duration and low-to-moderate intensity.
Offshore wind events drive rapid, intense, close-range fires. Concentrations spike hard and fall fast, and the same wind that drives the fire also drives infiltration through every gap in your building envelope. The January 2025 Los Angeles fires made the second category vivid for everyone in Southern California. Monitoring during the Eaton fire recorded outdoor PM2.5 spikes well above baseline across a wide area, and homes with HEPA filtration running measured meaningfully lower indoor concentrations than those without. That is the case for doing this work in advance rather than during.

Roughly $1,300 to $2,500 gets a typical Temecula home from “AC is not a filter” to a genuinely defensible position, and most of that spend also lowers summer bills and extends equipment life. Only if your return ductwork is sealed and you have at least MERV 13 filtration. A leaky attic return pulls smoky attic air into the house when the blower runs, making things worse. With sealed ducts and MERV 13, run the fan continuously for the best whole-house filtration you have available.
MERV 13 is the residential minimum, because it is the first rating with a defined efficiency of at least 50 percent on 0.3 to 1.0 micron particles, which is where wildfire smoke lives. MERV 8 is effectively useless against smoke. MERV 16 is better if your system has a deep media cabinet to hold it.
In a 1-inch return grille slot, it can. That configuration adds 0.25 to 0.40 in. w.c. of static pressure and can starve airflow enough to freeze the coil. In a 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet, the same MERV 13 media runs at a fraction of the pressure drop and is safe on most residential systems.
Yes, immediately, regardless of how it looks. A filter that ran through a smoke event is loaded with fine PM2.5 and re-releases particles into the airstream every time the blower starts. A 1-inch filter that normally lasts 60 to 90 days can load fully in under a week of heavy smoke.

Sometimes, but it is oversold. Ask for a camera inspection first and look for visible deposition inside the runs. What almost always does need attention is the evaporator coil and blower wheel, because smoke particulate is oily, bonds to those surfaces and permanently reduces airflow if it is left in place.
