There is a real list of HVAC work a homeowner should do themselves. There is a longer list that is illegal, dangerous, or a great way to turn a $280 repair into a $4,000 one. Here is the line, drawn honestly by someone who gets paid either way.

I want to be upfront about the conflict of interest in an article like this: I make money when you call me. So take it seriously when I tell you there are five or six things you should absolutely handle yourself, and that a contractor who tries to sell you a service call for a dirty filter is not somebody you want in your attic.
I also want to be equally direct about the other side. Every August I get called to houses where somebody watched a video, bought a can of refrigerant off a website, and turned a $340 capacitor job into a compressor replacement. The failure mode of amateur HVAC work is not “it does not work.” It is “it works for three weeks and then destroys the expensive part.”

In the Inland Empire, the standard 90-day interval is wrong. Our dust load is high, our summer runtime is long, and Santa Ana season can load a filter in days. My rule for Temecula-area homes: check monthly, replace a 1-inch filter every 30 to 60 days during cooling season, and every 60 to 90 days in the shoulder months. A 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet goes six to nine months.

This is the highest-value ten minutes of homeowner maintenance available and almost nobody does it. Kill power at the disconnect box next to the condenser and at the breaker. Wait five minutes. Then use a garden hose — not a pressure washer, which will lay the fins over — and rinse from the inside of the coil outward where you can reach, or straight through the fins gently where you cannot.
Why it matters here specifically: a coil packed with our fine desert dust cannot reject heat. Head pressure climbs, amp draw climbs, capacity drops, and the compressor runs hot on the exact days it is working hardest. Your evaporator coil pulls moisture out of the air and drains it. That line grows biological slime, and when it clogs, the safety float switch shuts the system down — usually at 4 p.m. on the hottest day of the year. Find the exterior PVC drain stub, put a wet/dry vac on it for two minutes, and pull the clog out. Pouring a cup of distilled vinegar down the access tee every couple of months keeps it from coming back.

Two feet of clearance on every side, five feet of clear space overhead. In Temecula and Murrieta tract homes I regularly find condensers boxed in by oleander, buried behind trash cans, or shoved into a three-foot side yard against a block wall where they recirculate their own discharge air. Trim it, move it, clear it.
Know which breaker is the air handler and which is the condenser. Know how to put the fan on AUTO instead of ON. Know where the float switch is. When you call me and can say “the outdoor unit hums but the fan is not spinning,” you have just cut my diagnostic time in half and saved yourself money.

I need to spend a paragraph here because this is the single most common DIY attempt and the single most dangerous one. A run capacitor is a cylindrical component inside the condenser’s electrical panel. It fails often — in our heat it is probably the most frequent summer failure I see — and the part costs under $40. The videos make it look like a five-minute swap.
Here is what the videos underplay: a capacitor stores a substantial electrical charge and holds it after the power is off. People have been seriously injured and killed discharging them incorrectly. Beyond the shock risk, using the wrong microfarad rating or the wrong voltage rating will run your compressor outside its designed current envelope and shorten its life measurably — a failure that shows up months later and looks unrelated.

That is not a lot of money to not get hurt and to have somebody verify that the capacitor was the actual problem rather than a symptom of a failing compressor start circuit. This one is worth understanding properly because the misconception is universal. Refrigerant is not gasoline. A sealed HVAC system does not use it up. If your charge is low, you have a leak — full stop. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak is putting money into a system that will lose it again.
